Teen Mentors
If you had
an older brother or sister growing up, or an older friend, you
remember how special it made you feel to have a big kid show some
interest in you.
Think
back. Wasn't it great to have someone to talk and laugh with who
would understand and even stick up for you? There's another kid in
your old shoes now, and you can help him or her.
If you are in
high school, you could be a volunteer in our School-Based Program.
Just one hour or
more a week can show a younger girl or boy that having fun can also
mean doing well in school. Plus, you'll earn community service
hours, be a part of our "The Think BIG Club" with other teens, and
become a Hero to an elementary school kid.
We'll provide a
place for you to meet with a child who has been chosen just for you.
A Big Brother Big Sister case manager will be there to help you get
started and make sure you have the materials you need. You'll look
over homework, read together or just talk and listen.
The funny thing
is, you will probably have as much fun as your new little friend.
"My
Little Brother's name is Ernesto. I think he's really smart,
but he wasn't reading much when we first started meeting. Now,
I think he reads a LOT better. His extended day director says
he hasn't missed a day of school since we got together. I like
it, too. And I get community service hours that really count
for something." - John, teen
mentor.
Is it cool to be a Big? Absolutely. Your
advantage here is that you are already what a younger kid wants to
be. Mentoring gives you built-in status. You are doing something
that matters AND having fun with other teens and with your Little
Brother or Sister at the same time.
Can't Mentor but
still interested? Put on some angel wings.
You can still
earn community service hours, and be a BIG help. Volunteer to be an
"office angel" at our Big Brothers Big Sisters agency. We can sure
use your help on an ongoing basis with a schedule that will work for
you and our office too.
Is it for you? Call or e-mail
Big Brothers Big Sisters and say you want to find out more about
being a teen mentor or office angel. It's easy to get
started.
