An Encouraging Big Sister
It started with a bright and friendly sophomore. This Little
Sister was raised by her Aunt as her parents were deceased. Betty
was always confident about herself and made good decisions. Betty’s
Aunt was single and was looking for a positive role model for Betty.
Betty was excited about having someone she could talk to and do fun
activities with. When Betty was matched with a Big Sister, Bertha,
the two became instant friends. They enjoyed the same type of
activities, such as going to the mall and church and had much to
talk about. Betty was also doing well at school and submitted 2
essays that earned her a scholarship at IRCC for nursing. However,
in the midst of Betty’s High School career, Betty developed personal
obstacles in her life Betty became less enthusiastic about school.
Betty’s Big Sister became concerned about a breakdown Betty had at
school and asked BBBS to help her help Betty through these personal
problems so that Betty would be able to follow out. Betty was able
to receive help thanks to her Big Sister pushing for her. During
their relationship, BBBS nominated Bertha as a Woman of Distinction
in the volunteer category. Betty joined Bertha as she was recognized
at a Luncheon. Betty now has a job she enjoys with the Parks and
Recreation and is a responsible worker. Betty will continue her
education to become a nurse and become a Big Sister as well!
